The first couple of episodes are really just there to be there, and I really hate shows that have such episodes, which is, basically, every show on air right now. However, when this show really gets to those episodes that can be used to something, it's really finds it's footwork. With Joss Whedon helming the show the stars seemed to be aligned for greatness, but it utterly failed to capitalize on the Marvel Cinematic Universe at its fingertips. The writing is particularly poor, as SHIELD changes to be whatever is needed for each particular episode, and the characters play to stereotypes. Most of the episodes are one-off adventures that follow Agent Coulson and his special ops team.

However, the season is shaken out of its rut by Captain America: The Winter Soldier; which forces the series into taking on serial story arcs with some substance. It's not that the show is all that bad, it's just that it aims so low and seems to avoid integrating the Marvel films as much as possible. There's fun and adventure to be had in Season 1 of Agents of SHIELD, but it could've been so much more if it'd tried.
